What’s Your Algorithm?
An algorithm is a mirror of your engagement on social media. It takes into account your likes, shares and how long you linger on posts and then curates content for you. That means, if like me you tend to linger on posts about brutalist architecture, you will see more of it on your feed. My social media feed is curated to Chihuahuas, architecture, spirituality and mummies.
I have been thinking recently about algorithms and what it means have that mirror of our interest and engagement and how we can see something similar in the patterns and circumstances in our lives. Like in social media, what we focus on, spend time on and continue to gravitate toward shapes our experience.
As my dad liked to say, “garbage in, garbage out” – there are many more eloquent variations of this truth in the sacred texts of many of our religions. When we focus on fear, we are more suspicious. When we spend time complaining, we fail to see blessings. When we focus on our differences, we forget how deeply we belong to each other. Alternatively, when we look to the positive, we see miracles hidden in plain sight. When we take a deep breath rather than scream, we find the grace we need to navigate difficult circumstances. When we reach out in kindness, we receive it back.
I invite you to take time this week and look at the algorithm not just of your social media but of your life experience. Are there themes or patterns that have arisen that you notice? Do those themes or patterns make you grateful or do they give you pause? You get to choose what you spend your time doing, what you fill your mind and heart with and what you focus your energy on. May your algorithms be filled with joy, kindness, work for unity and at least one cute Chihuahua video. Many blessings, friends!
Peace,
Bethany
